| Course Description |
Of all the basic forms of communication, listening – really listening for both information and feelings – receives the least attention. Knowing how to listen, and how to ask questions that provide insightful answers, is a valuable skill for engineers in the public and private sectors. This seminar explains how to ask questions and how to listen so that you and your business or government organization can be more effective. Topics included in this one-hour workshop include five forms of communication, levels of attentiveness, power of questions, tips on asking, and a personal action plan. Participants receive a handout that summarizes the seminar and includes references to articles, books, E-newsletters, and other self-study materials.
The Leadership Development Department, in conjunction with the Continuing Education Department of ASCE, is pleased to present this seminar. It is the beginning of what we hope will be a series of online courses regarding leadership skills. It is a direct effort to meet your needs in today's competitive market where technical skills alone do not equal success. The goal of developing ''leadership to broaden our members' perspectives and to enhance their career growth," is one of four goals set forth in ASCE's Strategic Plan. In order to gage members' interest in this goal, a survey was conducted at the four Zone Leadership Conferences this past winter. About 75 percent of the attendees were interested in participating in leadership development courses, and just over half rated online courses as a feasible way to obtain this training. Further, "improving communication skills" was rated among the top three areas of leadership development that members felt would benefit them the most. We hope you will use this course as an opportunity to begin, or continue, enhancing your leadership skills! |

"It is a great format. It allows many of us to gather in the conference room during lunch hour to attend the seminar in a very efficient and limited timeframe. The hour length is fantastic. It fits into our brown bag lunch seminar plan."
"In an environment where time management is so crucial, it is wonderful to be able to attend a meaningful seminar with such little ancillary time commitments such as travel and coordination. My compliments. ASCE has found the perfect seminar format for today's busy professional." |
