Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, P.E. is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Dr. Kumar received his bachelor degree from India and MS and Ph.D. degrees from University of Missouri-Rolla, USA. He worked with several government agencies and professional practice firms for over 11 years before accepting an academic position at SIUC in 1998. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Dr. Kumar is a nationally and internationally known geotechnical engineer. He has received several outstanding teaching and research awards from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and an exemplary young alumni award from University of Missouri-Rolla. Recently, Dr. Kumar received the Professional Recognition Award from ASCE St. Louis Section. He has successfully completed several externally funded research projects and is the author of over 65 articles published in reputed peer-reviewed technical journals, and national and international conference proceedings. |
Every civil engineering structure is supported on soil and/or rock except those that are in space or float in water. This statement signifies the importance of geotechnical engineering in the analysis and design of any civil engineering project. Geotechnical analysis and design require accurate estimation of soil and rock parameters developed
either through field tests, laboratory tests, or a combination of both. In either case, field exploration and soil/rock sampling are required to establish the desired soil and rock properties. Knowledge of various field exploration and sampling techniques, and their benefits and limitations, are as important for the civil engineers and geologists as the knowledge of analysis and design using the parameters obtained from the field/laboratory tests. Therefore, civil engineers and geologists should be well familiar with different methods of field exploration, sampling techniques, and various types of samples required to perform quality geotechnical analyses. Most undergraduate and graduate students do not get knowledge of most commonly used field exploration techniques, primarily because most faculty members teaching civil engineering (particularly geotechnical engineering) do not have suitable instructional material and sufficient field experience to explain the intricate details of field exploration and sampling.Technicians and drilling crews, who play a very important role for successful completion of any geotechnical field exploration, generally are not exposed to any formal training on this subject.
This DVD has been developed to bring geotechnical field exploration using test borings to your office or classroom. It is an excellent tool to train civil engineering undergraduate and graduate students, and civil engineers, geologists, technicians, and drilling crews ready to start their practice in the area of geotechnical engineering. The DVD presents a detailed discussion on drilling test borings using hollow stem augers and mud rotary techniques including, how to observe drilling operations, obtain soil samples, perform field tests, store and transport soil samples, and record the information on the field boring log. Discussion on purpose and objectives of a geotechnical field investigation and various methods of drilling test borings is also presented in an easy to understand format.
